Cala en Caló... it sounds so familiar, yet so alien and unknown at the same time. Why is this? Well, Cala en Caló is extremely well hidden and secretive, meaning that even if you happen to be coasting down Javea’s shoreline, you’ll almost certainly miss it. This is because Cala en Caló is geographically located in a very sneaky spot in Javea, to the extent where it wasn’t even labelled on Google Maps until recently.
What makes Cala en Caló even more exclusive is because it is camouflaged and hidden behind a huge island in the middle of the bay, obscuring the vision of the little beach itself for the people from outside... in other words, if you happen to be an outsider, or not very familiar with Javea’s coastline, you wouldn’t even be able to find it!
But don’t worry, we’re here to help and that is exactly why we designed this comprehensive guide of Cala en Caló, helping you experience the unimaginable, and the things that you really cannot miss when in Javea.
So where actually is Cala en Caló? Well, Cala en Caló is located in Javea, the beautiful little town where all our adventures begin from, and Javea is located in the Alicante region of Spain. More specifically, Cala en Caló is located on Javea’s southern coastline, the most remote and exotic part of Javea. It can be found between the famous beach Granadella, and Cala Ambolo. Take a look on the image below!
Nonetheless, as you can see, Cala en Caló is located in a very inaccessible region of Javea. As we briefly mentioned on our Kayaking in Javea article, geographically, Javea’s coastline is surrounded by peaking mountains and rock formations, some reaching over one hundred meters from the sea level... and this is very much the case for Cala en Caló, that is surrounded by towering cliff faces that encompass the entire bay.
This raises the following question: it sounds very difficult to access this bay, so how do I actually get to Cala en Caló? Well, the following section, explains in detail!
Well, you probably get the message by now, Cala en Caló is extremely remote and exclusive, and this may sound like something bad, however it’s the complete opposite. Because Cala en Caló is so inaccessible by land, it has had very little contact from humans, meaning that it has remained very protected from human deterioration and impact.

Cala en Caló is a bay that is only & uniquely accessible by sea. This is because it is located at the bottom of a huge canyon that measures over 100 meter in height! This means that there is no way to walk, hike, or climb down to Cala en Caló, so for those wanting to take an exotic little hike, unfortunately this is not the place for it!
Cala en Caló is very remote, and it is located around two kilometres away from the closest public beach, being either Cala Ambolo or Cala Granadella beach. This means that the easiest and the most efficient way to access it is by kayak.
Luckily for you, Siesta Advisor has extensive history operating and offering their services from Granadella to Cala en Caló in Javea. If you do not fancy to join one of our famous kayak excursions to Cala en Caló, don’t worry, there is one other alternative that you could explore: swimming. You could swim to this little bay, however we would definitely not recommend going from Granadella, as the distance between Granadella and Cala en Caló is almost two kilometres!
On top of that, there tends to be a lot of traffic on the water, especially during the summer season, and without the right equipment, it could be dangerous!
Nonetheless, you have the alternative of swimming from Cova del Llop Marí, a beautiful little cave just a couple hundred meters from Cala en Caló. I won’t go into detail on this article about this cave, as you can find more information here, nonetheless, after a steep hike, you’ll get to the ocean, from which you’ll be able to swim to Cala en Caló!
Keep in mind that this distance is still far, and for inexperienced swimmers, and those without the right equipment, we do not recommend it! It is always best to stay safe and let us help you explore this beautiful little bay with the most famous kayak excursion on the Costa Blanca!

So, if you happen to be a water fanatic and enjoy the underwater world as much as we do, Cala en Caló is perfect for you.
First and foremost, as we’ve previously mentioned, the isolated and exclusive nature of Cala en Caló has kept this unique little bay out of sight and off the radar, away from the touristic hotspots of Javea.
This has also meant that Cala en Caló enjoyed the privilege of having very little contact from humans in comparison to the other major beaches in Javea, remaining very protected from human deterioration and impact. This means that the beach remains abundant with marine flora and fauna, where you can expect to find some of the most incredible life imaginable.
It is said that snorkelling and kayaking in Cala en Caló is one of the most unique experiences in the entirety of Javea, if not Spain, as you can see some of the most life-abundant waters around! So, get ready to immerse yourself in one of the most vibrant snorkelling locations in the whole of Spain! Here’s a breakdown of some of the fish and life that you can expect to see in Cala en Caló!
Painted Comber
The painted comber has an orange-red to pinkish colour, with darker coloured vertical stripes along its body (resembling a comb) and a shimmery silver-blue spot towards the tail end.
Saddled Sea Bream
Easy to spot by its flat grey shape and the black spot between its body and tail, the saddled sea bream is one of the most common types of fish in the Mediterranean Sea. In fact, this is the type of fish that we most commonly see around Cala en Caló, often being surrounded by entire shoals of them!
Ornate Wrasse
This fish starts out with a vivid green colour, and as it grows, it develops a shimmering rainbow colour, with stripes of different colours across its body!
Fried Egg Jellyfish
Don’t worry, I know what you’re thinking! "NO! I HATE JELLYFISH!" I used to think the same until I came across these jellyfish! Fried Egg Jellyfish, also known as Egg-Yolk Jellies, are called this because of a distinctive bell on the head of the jellyfish, looking like a cracked egg an floating through the water. However, the best part is that these jellyfish are COMPLETELY HARMLESS, meaning that you can even touch them without any issue! You will often find a friend egg jellyfish in Cala en Caló, and if you do, don’t worry, it’s perfectly fine!
Apart from snorkelling in Cala en Caló, there are plenty more things that remain secret, and one of them is the little cave that hides itself under the central island of the Cala en Caló bay.
This colossal rock directly in the centre of Cala en Caló has assumedly fallen off from the surrounding cliff faces of the bay, with it slowly and naturally being eroded away over the years, creating the island that it is today! This erosion would have taken place due to a combination of natural meteorological factors such as the wind, the rain, and most importantly, the waves!
However, this natural erosion has provoked something magnificent in the heart of Cala en Caló (literally!). Under the central island, you can now find a system of caves! In fact, this cave system consists of five tunnels, all joined in the centre by a central chamber. Don’t worry, this central chamber is big enough for a lot of people and you’ll always be able to breath inside. In fact, I have been inside the Cala en Caló cave with groups of around 15-20, giving you an example of just how big it is.
Regarding the tunnels themselves, there are two tunnels that are completely above the water (RED ARROWS), one facing north and the other one facing east from the centre. We use these tunnels to enter and exit as they’re the easiest way to access the Cala en Caló cave! There are also three submerged tunnels underwater (BLUE ARROWS), one on the north-east section, another one south (this is an important one!), and a long and narrow one on the west side of the island.
The one on the south is very important, as this tunnel is what provokes the crystalline turquoise blue colour inside the cave! That’s because the sunlight enters from under the water, something that absorbs and filters the red visible light rays, and consequently leaves us with an incredibly blue colour! The cave of Cala en Caló is truly magical, and something you cannot miss when kayaking to this magnificent bay.
Something that can also be done in Cala en Caló is cliff jumping, the sport of jumping from somewhere high into the water without any equipment! What makes Cala en Caló perfect for cliff jumping is the fact that it has different heights for different levels of experience. In other words, if you want to just take it easy, or perhaps practice some backflips, there are some small jumps, perfect for children. Or if you want to improve your confidence and push your limits, there are also some higher jumps!
Nonetheless, this comes with a WARNING!
You should only do cliff jumping in Cala en Caló with the supervision of one of our very competent monitors who will show you exactly where you can jump from, and where to! This is because some underwater sections of Cala en Caló have big underwater rock formations and structures, and if you don’t know what you’re doing, you could hurt yourself!
